How to Convert a Kitchen Table to a Train Table

A train table is a flat surface used to assemble and run a hobby train set. It is possible to convert an ordinary kitchen table to a train table by using items easily purchased at a local hardware store. A homemade train table can save hundreds of dollars when compared to the higher priced choices on the market.

Sand the edges of the plywood smooth, rounding out the corners and edges a little so they aren't as sharp. Thoroughly clean the wood dust from the plywood after sanding.

Tape the edges on all sides of the plywood with Gorilla tape, making sure an even amount covers the top and underside. Gorilla tape is a type of duct tape made to cover rough or uneven surfaces.

Paint the plywood with green acrylic paint for grassy areas and blue for water. Include earth and rock colors for a more realistic landscape.

Cover the kitchen table with a heavy vinyl tablecloth for protection. Add the plywood train table. Assemble the train set.
