Create a unique and distinct look in your bathroom by transforming a piece of furniture into a bathroom vanity. Furniture-style vanities create a custom-made look for your bathroom. Use antique dressers or buffet tables, or choose new, modern furniture. Always measure the space where the vanity will be placed, and measure the size of the sink as well. Consider repainting an antique piece of furniture or even adding a granite countertop for a fresh, refurbished look. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
- 1
Measure the minimum and maximum space for the vanity, including width and length. Don't forget to allow for a small adjustment, normally 1 or 2 inches, if a countertop is being added. Take measurements with you when visiting salvage shops and antique stores. Browse new furniture stores for modern, newly made furniture. Remember, antique replicas are common and may be sturdier than vintage or primitive furnishings.
2Purchase a sink to place on top of the vanity. Make sure the sink will fit by measuring the circumference. Note that the overhang or lip of the sink will add 1-2 inches to the total area.
3Using a jigsaw, cut out a hole on the top of the vanity where the sink will be placed. Use a hole saw to cut out a small area behind the sink for the faucet. Measure the length of the plumbing. If you lack the proper tools, then hire a carpenter to make these simple cuts.
4Remove all drawers that interfere with plumbing fixtures. Remove the back of the drawer, and keep the front face only. Use heavy-duty adhesive or caulking to replace the front of the drawers.
5Measure the length of the plumbing fixtures underneath the sink to determine where to cut out a hole in the back of the vanity. An exact measurement is not necessary. Use a jigsaw to cut open the hole.
6Set the sink into the vanity hole. Caulk around the opening between the sink and the vanity top. Allow to dry 24 hours. Hook up all plumbing fixtures. Mount the faucet.
