How to Make a Make-Up Vanity Mirror

How to Make a Make-Up Vanity Mirror

A quiet place to apply your make-up is not too much to ask. Create a make-up vanity mirror and enjoy the moment. You will be less inclined to rush and inspired to add those finishing touches before you head out the door. The main considerations for creating a make-up vanity mirror are its shape and the decoration of the frame. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

The Basic Ingredients

    1

Purchase a mirror. Decide what shape of mirror works best for you and for your decor. Do you prefer an oval, round or rectangular mirror? What size is your vanity table? A small vanity will look best with a mirror that does not overpower it.

    2

Shop for molding. View molding choices online or in frame shops before making a purchase. Get an idea of what's out there and do a bit of comparison shopping.

    3

Purchase molding. Write down the dimensions of your mirror and head to a frame shop, home improvement store or buy your molding online. Purchase enough molding to cover all sides of your mirror to complete your frame.

Frame It Yourself

    4

Saw the strips of molding in four pieces, according to the mirror dimensions. Each piece should be the length of each side plus the width of the molding itself. For example, if your frame molding is 2 inches wide, add 4 inches to the overall length before sawing to accommodate the mitering. Do this with all four pieces.

    5

Miter your framing pieces. If you do not own a mitering tool, take your frame pieces to a hardware store. Home improvement stores and hardware stores will miter them for you for a small fee.

    6

Glue frame pieces together at the corners with wood glue. Clamp the corners and secure the seams with a staple gun.

    7

Allow the glue to dry 24 hours and remove the clamps. Clean off any remaining glue with a straight edge after removing the clamps.

    8

Paint or stain your frame in a color that matches or complements your vanity. Allow to dry thoroughly and then brush on a coat of sealer. Allow to dry 2 to 3 days.

    9

Lay your mirror on flat surface and place the frame on it. Attach the frame to the mirror with a mirror adhesive to avoid ruining the mirror silvering.
